BUSH POETRYBush poetry is verse with regular rhyme and rhythm, best heard recited rather than read. It can be long or short but it always tells a story with a distinct and satisfying conclusion. Bring a comfy cushion, your esky and supper for an event like no other in Gloucester: original bush poetry by award winning poets in the all-Aussie arena of the cattle saleyard stands.

WORLD HERITAGE WILDERNESSEmbrace the energy of 1000-year-old trees in the remnant Gondwana rainforests in Barrington Tops, you’ll feel like you’re on the filmset for Lord of The Rings.
The rainforests of World Heritage Barrington Tops National Park are of international significance, forming part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Carved out of ancient volcanic flows, the park rises from near sea level to over 1500m and protects one of the largest temperate rainforests in mainland Australia, along with a host of diverse habitats and wide range of birds and animals. The park is a bushwalker’s paradise, with an excellent walking track network that includes short and easy walks to more difficult overnight hikes, with plenty of sites to set up a bush camp for the evening. |
MOUNTAIN MAID gold mineTouch relics from gold rush days at the heritage Mountain Maid mine, hidden deep in the cool rainforest at Copeland Tops State Conservation Area. Peek inside the eerie mine shaft, walk through some historic buildings and get up close to the old battery stamper, whirly-gig gold separator, air compressor and gold carts.
The tour reveals much of the rich gold mining heritage of Copeland which was once a bustling rush town after the valuable mineral was discovered at Back Creek in 1876. The steeply-sided valley was home to about 1,100 people and the 51 mines produced about 11 tonnes. The volunteer guides will also share their knowledge of fascinating information about the flora and fauna of the park. |
the bucketts scenic walk (The buccan buccans)The Buccan Buccans (the Bucketts Mountains) are the dramatic rocky outcrops overlooking Gloucester. This area of native vegetation of 1370 hectares act as rocky sentinels above the peaceful Gloucester valley and provide a large area of island habitat in a sea of farmland.
Known as the Lions Bucketts Scenic Walk, this is not an easy walk but it provides ample rewards: panoramic views of the Gloucester valley, a rich array of flowering plants, wildlife and wonderful photo opportunities. |
GLOUCESTER TOPSAt Gloucester Tops within Barrington Tops National Park you can step behind the green curtain into a dimly lit world of ancient Antarctic beech, brightly coloured fungi, towering tree ferns and pure mountain streams tumbling down mossy cascades. The magical nature of Gondwanaland…. rare and pure but still visible after millions of years at Barrington Tops. (And always take care when walking or swimming at waterfalls and waterways within Barrington Tops.)

gloucester mosaic walkTake a self-guided walk through the history of Gloucester depicted in art on the Gloucester Mosaics Walk.
The Gloucester Mosaic Walk takes you on foot to see mosaics on walls and on footpaths around town. There’s even some works that Gaudi would be proud of: planter boxes and creative seating in the Meeting Place plus the large platypus covered in mosaic tiles in Billabong Park. The mosaics scattered around the township depict stories of Gloucester from the earliest days to the present time. Take yourself on a journey and learn about Gloucester through the mosaics. Start outside the Visitors Centre with the tables in the meeting place and the wall mosaics opposite. Then follow the pavement mosaics starting on the corner outside Webbs Real Estate and walking anticlockwise down to the roundabout and then back up the other side of the street crossing over at Hume Street to complete the circuit back to the meeting place. |
